As far as the kitchen, maybe there is a way you could compromise. Could you set aside a section of counter for them, where it would be okay for them to leave dirty dishes, etc? Maybe they could agree to keep the sink, stove, and part of the counter clean if they have some room to leave their mess until they have time to deal with it. Talk to them about it and see if you can work something out.
